Each day, there are more and more participants of
electronic payment systems. Those participants need to
communicate with each other, although they use different communication
protocols (X.25, FrameRelay, SDLC, TCPIP, ..) and different message
formats (APAX30, ISO8583, SPDH, proprietary standards, ...). On the other hand, mechanical equipment, used in those transactions, has been changing so rapidly that financial institutions
and merchants, commonly use three or four generations of equipment
and each of them uses different communication protocols. With each release of new type of
equipment or with each incorporation of a new participant in the electronic payment
system, additional effort is needed to adapt an existing system to a new
communication protocol or message format.
